A Guide to Self-Publishing Part 2

Cost of Self-Publishing

The costs of publishing a book vary depending on the length of the book, production costs, and the retail price that you set. It is important to be prepared when it comes to how much you will pay to self-publish your book.

The length of your book impacts printing costs, there will also be extra costs if you hire an editor, hire someone to design your book cover, potentially for formatting depending on which platform you use, and for any promotional ads or materials that you want to use.

Self-published authors recommend that at the very least, you should save up some money to pay for editing and a book cover design.

Preparing your Manuscript

Once you have written your book, you want to get the text of your book into a computer file. Most people use programs such as MS Word. Getting feedback on your book is always a good idea before publishing. Usually, the best writing tips come from people who are reading your book for the first time, a fresh set of eyes can help you catch typos and grammatical errors. A new perspective from someone can give you ideas on how to tighten up your story and it can make the theme more clear.

Giving your book to one or more “beta readers,” (someone who reads and provides feedback on your manuscript before publishing) before giving it to an editor, can cut down your costs on editing. You can also use writing software such as Grammarly or the Hemingway Editor.
